Scottie Barnes has pretty high expectations for the Raptors this season. And he isn’t exactly trying to hide it.
“You guys are going to be in for a treat… I’m pretty excited to get to it,” Barnes said on Media Day. That’s quite the statement from a team that already had a pretty good year. Toronto won 46 games last season, finished fifth in the East and got back into the playoffs.
Barnes went on to state, “Our goal is to win a championship, but we’ve gotta get over the hump in the playoffs. I think the addition we made will help us get over that hump,” he said.
Leonard is obviously the biggest addition, but he’s not the only reason Toronto should be feeling good. Allen Graves looked really good during Summer League, and plenty of young players on this roster should be better than they were a year ago.
This season isn’t just about what Leonard can bring back to Toronto. Barnes will have plenty on his plate too. He is one of the faces of this team now, and the Raptors will need him to keep improving if they actually want to make that championship goal a reality.
Last season proved Toronto could be a playoff team. This season, the Raptors clearly want to be more than that. And judging by Barnes’ comments, he’s not exactly worried about the pressure that comes with it. He sounds excited.
If Barnes is right about Raptors fans getting a treat, this could be a pretty fun season in Toronto.”
