“LeBronto.” For years, that nickname made Raptors fans clench their fists..
LeBron James ended Toronto’s season multiple times during his stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He hit shots that made no sense, time and time again, and turned the Raptors into his favourite playoff opponent. It got to the point where it almost felt inevitable whenever the two teams met in the postseason.
Now imagine this. What if LeBronto became… a good thing? What if LeBron decided to lace it up wearing a Raptors jersey? It sounds crazy, but if LeBron is looking for one last stop in his NBA career, the Raptors should absolutely be in the conversation.
Toronto has already shown it’s serious about winning by bringing Kawhi Leonard back. You don’t trade Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a pick swap unless you believe your championship window is open. If you’re already pushing your chips in, why not go all the way?
One thing that’s always stood out about LeBron is how much he’s enjoyed coming to Toronto. Even after all those playoff battles, he’s never spoken negatively about the city or its fans. In fact, after a Lakers win over the Raptors in 2024, James made it clear how much he appreciated the reception he gets every time he plays north of the border.
“It’s always been mutual respect and love every time I come here and play here,” James said. “Throughout my career, they’ve shown me nothing but love, even through the battles in the post-season. These fans are always appreciative of myself and I try to give it back to them when I step out on the floor.”
That’s pretty remarkable considering everything he put Raptors fans through. Toronto has always embraced greatness, even when it came at their expense. Now imagine if that greatness was wearing a Raptors jersey. The basketball fit isn’t as far-fetched as some people might think, either.
LeBron has never played with Kawhi Leonard, but the opportunity was there years ago. After signing with the Lakers in 2018, the organization made a serious push to pair him with Leonard following Toronto’s championship run. Instead, Kawhi chose to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, and the two future Hall of Famers never became teammates.
Now, seven years later, they have another chance. Leonard is back in Toronto, and the Raptors have made it clear they are trying to win now. LeBron also would not have to carry the load every single night, and at this stage of his career, that is important.
He could share the spotlight with someone he has had postseason battles with during his time with the Miami Heat when he was going head-to-head with the Klaw and the San Antonio Spurs. James with Leonard, could help mentor the Raptors’ younger players and chase one more championship without having to do everything himself.
Another interesting part of this fit is what it would mean on the defensive end. LeBron is still a smart defender, but at this stage of his career, he’s not the same constant two-way force he once was. The eye test has proven that during his last couple years with the Lakers. With Toronto he wouldn’t have to carry that responsibility every night.
You’ve already got Kawhi Leonard, who is still one of the best defenders the game has ever seen when healthy. On top of that, the Raptors have done a fantastic job building a defensive identity around Scottie Barnes, who has real Defensive Player of the Year-level upside.
Then you look around the roster and there are more pieces that can take pressure off him: Collin Murray-Boyles, Jamal Shead, Ja’Kobe Walter, a group that’s young, talented, and already bought into defending.
Toronto has already built a competitive roster. They do need to make at least a couple more moves to become a legit threat, but adding one of the greatest players the game has ever seen would only raise that ceiling.
Of course, getting a deal done wouldn’t be easy. The Raptors would have to get creative, and there are most likely no shortage of teams interested in LeBron. One thing is clear however, if there’s even a chance, Toronto should be one of the first teams to make the call.
Raptors fans spent years watching LeBron break their hearts. Wouldn’t it be something if the player who created “LeBronto” helped bring another championship to Toronto before calling it a career?
