Quick Reactions – Sixers 106, Raptors 98

When Swaggy P is the difference, something's gone wrong.

Grades only as I also have the full post-game going up tomorrow morning.

Note: I messed up the original, Amir and Linas should not have had A+…if you don’t put a grade in it defaults to A+. Sorry.

Recap | Box Score

106Philadelphia 76ers
Dominic McGuire, SF 20 MIN | 2-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 4 PTS | +5Didn’t really do much. His two assists were both in transition and looked nice, but he’s otherwise a zero offensively and I don’t want him on the floor late.
Andrea Bargnani, C 40 MIN | 10-21 FG | 0-2 FT | 7 REB | 1 AST | 22 PTS | -822 points will mask the horrid inefficiency (21 FG, 0FTM). Hit the glass OK but wasn’t strong defensively, challenged to keep up with quick Sixer bigs.
Jonas Valanciunas, C 25 MIN | 3-6 FG | 5-6 FT | 11 REB | 3 AST | 11 PTS | +7Played great when he was allowed to, had zero fouls, drove to the rim hard, made up for any mistakes with hustle. No idea why he didn’t play more late, forcing Sixers to go bigger instead of matching what they dictated.
Jose Calderon, PG 37 MIN | 5-10 FG | 2-2 FT | 5 REB | 12 AST | 13 PTS | -10What’s to be expected from Jose on the offensive end. He did poorly guarding Jrue Holliday but that’s to be expected, too.
DeMar DeRozan, SG 42 MIN | 8-18 FG | 7-8 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 24 PTS | -11Scored efficiently enough and really should have gotten to the line even more. Unfortunately couldn’t handle J-Rich or Nick Young when assigned.
Ed Davis, PF 5 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 2 PTS | 0Didn’t notice he played except for one dunk from a KLow pass.
Amir Johnson, PF 21 MIN | 2-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 4 PTS | -10Fouled out with nary an impact. Was used for defensive purposes to combat small Philly lineup but the team got torched pretty badly while he was out there.
Linas Kleiza, SF 17 MIN | 1-3 FG | 3-3 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 5 PTS | -6This should have been his type of game, with small ball prevalent, but he wasn’t quick enough to keep up with the Sixer wings. Probably shouldn’t be used/considered as a floor spacer any more (33% career, 32% as a Rap).
Kyle Lowry, PG 30 MIN | 5-14 FG | 3-8 FT | 7 REB | 7 AST | 13 PTS | -9I’d love to give him an A+ just for being back, and his aggression and effort were welcome additions. Still, he blew a couple assignments late and showed poor body language and leadership on two occasions in the fourth.
John Lucas, PG 3 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 0 PTS | +2Played a quick segment of the 2nd in a 2-PG set and was invisible. Incomplete.

Five Things We Saw

  1. Raptors fell apart completely on defense down the stretch. Philly shot 52% in the fourth and 64% in the final six minutes.
  2. Raptors likewise fell apart on offense, shooting 44% in the fourth and adding just one three. Also choked at the line, going 3/9.
  3. Starting lineup played well enough together with a positive net rating, but the 2-PG, DD at SF lineups struggled pretty badly.
  4. Seriously, why let Philly dictate the size match-up? I understand their wings and PFs are quick and a pain, but the team played just fine the first 42 minutes against it (Kwame played just 5min). Jonas had the team’s best +/- and most of the best lineup combos involved him.
  5. Need to rebound for tomorrow. Really let this one slip and played the key guys big minutes to try and seal the win, so there may be fatigue tomorrow.
