Video: Leaving your man open

In Part 1 we ask why Belinelli left Rush wide open.

In Part 2 we examine why Bargnani felt the need to help.

I like these episodes of playes broken down. One improvement though. You might want to place
the camera on something instead of holding it (I assume its the camera shaking, not your TV).
The swinging makes it a bit hard to watch.

The first one was a good example of over helping because our guards cant keep their people
in front of them. You wouldnt want to leave your man open like that, but on the other hand
if Marco hadnt helped, it might have been a layup or and-1.

In the second one Marco and AB play decent pick’n'roll defense at first, but then AB forgets who he is covering and gives up an easy one. He is normally covering big guys that dont step out for threes, so it somehow understandable that he isnt paying that much attention to Granger behind the line and he was after all trying to help Jack. Mistake still no doubt about it.

  2. Biff says:

Nice I like the idea of live game footage breakdowns. Not sure if this will be a constant (every game, every week?) feature on the site, but I would suggest showing a good example of the defense that the Raptors failed to show on that play. (Possibly from a totally different game or not, I’m not sure) Just a suggestion, but it would be cool to see how the Raptors were supposed to do it in said situation(s).

    Keep at you guys.

    ummmmmm….yeah

  4. tonious35 says:

TRiPod Arse…Tripod….get an okay one from Futureshop for $30-40, don’t need to get the $200 ones lol. Nice TV, what make is it?

Belinelli and Bargs in this situation are definitely over helping! If this is the coach’s fault…they should be fired. I have to say that this is a case of not trusting the defensive matchup of your teamate beforehand, lack of defensive awareness, and short term fatigue.

    1. Beli for sure lost track of his man B.Rush firsthand, but he also did not give himself time to think that Jack can somehow keep up with Watson (the initial driver). Then also look at Bargnani trying to cover Psycho-T, why and how the hell does Bargs end up at the 3pt line while covering Psycho-T right after the Watson pass and Tyler is waiting in the paint for an O-rebound well ahead of Bargs!? Is Bargs just staring at the point guard and he thinks he’s defending the point guard? Maybe Belinelli saw Bargs heading away from his coverage and that forced him to over help? This is when a vet is needed to yank on a teammate’s jersey to pull them to their right man.

    2. Bargs again did not read the scouting report, Ford is much weaker than Jack and Jack can outmuscle him into a bad shot, also it is better to concede a forced two pointer with a lead, than a baby-ass, clean 3pt look. Some things on the floor you can take for granted from another team and they are the in-capabilities and the bad habits.

Really great defenses must study the scouting reports and make a general judgment call on the players they are against.

    Cool stuff.

FYI You could buy a usb TV tuner for about $80-100, it will allow you to record everything into .avi straight from your digital box.

    • Arsenalist says:

Now that would be copyright violation which is what I’m trying to avoid.

As for the tripod, we can buy one as soon as we sell some shirts.

      • Brandon says:

No it would not. You are showing short video clips for educational purposes only. Not for profit. That is not a copyright violation. It is protected under fairuse laws.

        • AltRaps says:

          Very true.

Even better if able to show a balance of what works and doesn’t as Biff said. Otherwise you’d have Jay and Bryan looking for any legal reason to take it down…you know, just for sheer embarrassment.

        • Arsenalist says:

          Noted. Thanks.

      • siggian says:

Just as an FYI, recording what the TV is displaying is just as much of a copyright violation as recording to AVI.

However, as Brandon says, you’d have a strong case for fair use (as a derivative work, I believe) because you are only showing a small part of the game and enhancing it with your own commentary. (Not-for-profit only applies if there was some sort of license with not-for-profit terms in it)

(Not a lawyer but I read Plagerism Today out of interest)

        • siggian says:

          And normally I can spell…

        • Brandon says:

I want to clarify that what I meant by “not for profit” is that Arsenalist is not selling a copy of the game video for his profit. He is providing it for free. It is difficult to argue that anyone is gaining anything financially, and therefore that the NBA is losing financially, if the content is given away.

The actual law is available right here:
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_dealing#Canada

Note that there are six criteria that must be evaluated if it comes to a lawsuit. All six clauses work in favour of these clips and against the notion that they are violating copyright.

If you look at the case of Rob Ager, who posts detailed film criticisms on Youtube, you can see the most extreme consequence of such a thing. The videos were merely taken down, and Ager reposted them with a new account. That’s the worst that could happen to anyone posting actual captured video from a ball game for the purposes of criticism.

          • Bendit says:

Not to take this too far…but one can argue that such displays enhances viewership/eyeballs. This in turn would allow espn (the site owner) to charge a higher rate for advertising and voila..profit margins get a boost. Arse, if he has it in him, can demand a stipend increase and end up driving an Aston-Martin…….

But all in all a terrific addition to the site. Keep it going.

  6. Pop Sow says:

    Rivetting!

  7. Brandon says:

Who exactly is calling the signals defensively for this team? These guys are confused because there isn’t enough communication out there.

It can’t be Bargs because of his quiet personality. Somebody has to quarterback this team defensively or they won’t get any better. And it needs to be someone who has everything in sight in front of him. This means a forward.

This degree of confusion is inexcusable. It’s an embarrassment.

  8. Statement says:

In the second video, you’ll notice that TJ gets into the painted area and there are 3 raptors IN THE PAINT?

Protect the paint philosophy much? This reeks of Jay Triano.

  9. sleepz says:

Belinelli decided to ignore his defensive responsbility on the first play. Just poor court awareness on the defensive end and really no excuse as his teammates were both in good position initially. When you watch the play develop Barg’s over committed thinking TJ was going left on the pick and roll so it left an opening on the baseline which Belinelli tried to fill. The result is we are using three players to guard two, while Rush is sitting in the corner waiting for the pass and an open shot.

Second play I think Barg’s thinks the shot is going up so he’s moving towards the bucket not realizing his man has now drifted out to the perimeter. Not the wisest idea to go and help when it wasn’t needed but maybe thats partly a lack of knowing your teammates and their abilities.

Needless to say is that there is a definite lack of court awareness and cohesion on the defensive end of the floor for the Raps. I don’t think temporary swithcing strategies help it either as there is not a total commitment to switching which creates confusion and quite frankly shouldn’t be done anyways. No NBA team switches continuously. Typically only in situations when the defender being picked can’t get through.

We don’t see the confusion on the offensive end of the floor (thankfully) but it would be nice if they could duplicate efforts on both ends.

    • Arsenalist says:

Well, see, that’s why I’m not blaming anybody in these videos. If Belinelli is supposed to help then he did his job perfectly and rotation didn’t help him (Turk, Johnson or whoever). If he helped on his own without it being a coaching instruction, then it’s obviously his fault.

There’s no right or wrong in these videos. I’m just pointing out plays where “something” on defense went wrong. What that something was remains up for debate and only Triano knows 100%.

  10. Carbon says:

“Good defense, good defense, good defense, BAAAAAAAD DEFENSE! BAD DEFENSE!”

LOL sounded like you were training a puppy…

Love these video breakdowns, they’re awesome. I agree with the tripod idea but in keeping with the “ghettoness” you can invest in a laser pointer and start indicating which players you’re talking about.

It’ll be like university lectures all over again :)

  11. TorontoForever says:

Good defense, Good defense, Good defense, Good defense, Good defense, Good defense, BAD DEFENSE. :P I like the two situations you pointed out and I think that Ford should not have been doubled as Granger is more of a threat. Mistake on Bargs part.

  12. Matt says:

I can understand the first part of the video, wasn’t bellineli mistake, thats the protect the paint philosophy, but that second video…….ugh..bargs we’re playing basketball not soccer WTF is he using his legs for, if he didnt want that to happen then he should not have left Granger, and its not like he didnt knew where Grange was, I mean that was just absolutely disgusting, I dont even think we need to double team TJ, yet they were triple teaming him!!! this defence makes last years one look acceptable, lucky us we have offence that most teams in the league can’t even describe it, let alone try to stop it.

  13. glen says:

great stuff…keep it up! (please buy yourself one of those non-shaking t.v.’s or put camera down on a surface ;)
