Morning Coffee Sept 13

Bleacher Report

Why he would stay- Bosh loves the city and GM Bryan Colangelo is doing what it takes to win. With a solid supporting cast and great fans, Bosh is happy in Toronto.

Why he would leave- Bosh could be sick of the Raptors underachieving and go to a contending team. I don’t think that he’s going to play alongside James or Wade because he wants to be the franchise player, but a condending team is a possibilty.

Bucks Diary

3. Andrea Bargnani… 56.5 million through 2015
Comment:  This contract doesn’t look horrible monetarily, but when you consider that the promisee is a serious loss producer, and a perennial member of my "20 Most Harmful" lists, any premium — no — any long term deal involving this player is a bad, toxic deal.

I’m thinking that even if Bargnani doesn’t reach his full potential the deal is still pretty good. To call it toxic is just uneducated…

    • Saadles says:

I know, you’d think someone with Andrew Bogut and Michael Redd on their team would know more about toxic contracts

    • Hardcore Raps says:

gotta say there are much more toxic assets out there than this list…..

    • TheR3dMenace says:

Especially since that particular contract doesn’t go into effect until 2010/11

  2. mark says:

I posted the same message as Saadles on his page. They let 2 of their best young players walk because they are broke!
Where is Eddy Currie, Diop or ammo to name a few? Brand, BDiddy and all signed last year and are worse not to mention Sam Dalabert? He makes more and isn’t anywhere near as good as Bargs forget potential!

    HOW IS OAK BEATING JYD!!!????

    • Shayan says:

Because Oak threatened to come and punch out all the fans who don’t vote for him. And he’s good on his word, just ask Jeff McInnis.

      • Josh says:

Because oak was a better player, a lil past his prime here in TO but his impact went way beyond anyone not named Vince Carter at the time.

I posted this here as the site asked to refrain from personal attacks.

    Dear TWC,

Please never write an article related to basketball ever again. You have absolutely no idea what the game of basketball is about or it’s players or about contracts. Gilbert Arenas and Baron Davis are probably the only 2 players that actually deserve to be on the list.

    Bargnani, Jackson, Lewis, Smith, Granger.
Are you kidding? Go check out the top contracts on hoopshype.com and then apologize for this abysmal attempt of an article.

    Thanks for your time.

PS Please, please don’t waste your time and ours with this drivel.

    • abstract says:

thats a bit of an overreaction don’t you think? giving a 5yr $50m contract to a player that has only shown potential in 50% of his career (and has been an absolute trash of a player in the other 50%)… i think the author is entitled to that assumption.

now, as a raptor fan i’d love to see bargnani succeed and i do think he has a lot of potential, but if you watch him 3 or 4 times a year -max- you can’t seriously expect someone to hold him in high regard. he hasn’t doing anything consistently to demonstrate otherwise.

lets hope triano gets the most out of him and that he finally has a consistent year, but until he does- theres no point in overreacting when someone calls his contract toxic.

      imo.

    • Tarun Joseph says:

I think a commenter said it right. most GM’s would sell there soul to have Granger for 60 Mil

    • J says:

      Mostly agree.

When you hear the term “toxic” contract, you normally think it’s a player whose deal is holding back the team and who, by virtue of that toxic contract, is highly unlikely to be moved. That is why you’d be least willing to have that contract on your books.

It’s very obvious what TCW did as part of his “analysis”. He took the 21 contracts listed on Hoopshype as being over $10 mil in 2012-2013 (there’s a few more from this offseason, such as Hedo Turkoglu, but they’re not updated yet), and made 10 arbitrary selections. Jackson and Ellis, but not Maggette? Really now.

Unfortunately, half of the list shouldn’t be up there at all, because other GMs would probably be more than happy to take on the contracts if the opportunity arose. Why would you be so wary of holding the contract when you can get rid of it (relatively) easily?

If TCW wants a credible list, he should dig a little deeper. Even though the deals of Curry, Diop and Randolph (for example) are getting more bearable as their expiration draws nearer, most GMs would probably agree that those three contracts are a lot less desirable than, say, Josh Smith, Danny Granger or Stephen Jackson.

I do think Rashard Lewis probably belongs on the list though, even if his team did make the finals. It’d be a different story if he was the reason for the Magic’s success, but I bet the Magic would deal him if they could.

  5. Strik9 says:

The writer of Bucks Diary dosen’t know what he’s talking about. It’s as simple as that. Bargs will keep proving the doubters wrong by continuing to improve off the 2nd hald of last season. Book it.

  6. mark says:

Danny Granger could tear his contract in half and get a bigger one next summer. I agree he is wrong about Bargs but its not rediculous at all. To say that danny granger isn’t worth the money is nuts. He’s young and was 5th in scoring. Nuff said.
