Hmmm… the greatest, does that imply victories to losses, or doing the most with the talent you are handed? Perhaps we can even look at the most commited to the organization.

Malone was great, brilliant… but I have to go with Sam due to his commitment through thick and thin.

  2. stan says:

    Sam

  3. Dare I say it but Phil Jackson is the greatest coach of all time. To get political I’ll say why. John Wooden’s legacy remains in tact and is well deserved but the playing field wasn’t even yet. In the 90’s I believe racial equality was more present during Phil’s run coaching the Chicago Bulls. Don’t misunderstand me The Celtics, Lakers, and Bruins were awesome but those teams were still cracking racial bariers. In the 90’s African American men really started believing in the American dream. Society was changing. We were now on as many magazine covers as everyone else and Phil Jackson coached a man named Michael Jordan to be the greatest of all-time. It’s not just the records or rings but it’s the stature of your legaacy. I honestly believe that as the Michael Jordan statue stands in front of the United Center there should also be one of Phil Jackson close by admiring his work. For how great Michael is, he knows he couldn’t have achieved half of his success without Phil Jackson. So for the greatest player of all time I credit the Greatest Coach of all time…Phil Jackson.

    • Tony Rizzo says:

I think MJ would have reached super stardom under any coach. I think Phil is great, but if I had a choice I would pick Popovich on sheer coaching ability.

Think of it this way, who could have motivated last years Raptors team the most? Phil Jackson or Pop?

      • Hardcore Raps says:

Jackson’s Rings all included a comination of MJ and Pippen, Shaq and Kobe (and then ofcourse last years lakers which was probably the WORST team he has lead to a championship)…. he is the most OVERRATED coach of all time.

Nothing against Phil, I’m sure he is a good or great coach, but you get those players and its almost an automatic win.

        • j says:

mj and pippen won their championships in the 90s, but they started their careers in the mid 80s. they barely could get past isaiah’s pistons, and mj was known as a do-it-all, one-man-team, but could not win it all, until phil jackson became the coach.

the lakers became a west powerhouse when they signed shaq and traded for kobe. but they couldnt get past stockton and malone’s jazz, and then tim duncan’s spurs. it was not until phil became the coach that they began to dominate the league.

          • Hardcore Raps says:

I’m not saying that Phil was a bad coach, he has made the playoffs every year as a head coach. But without those players he has not made it out of the 2nd round, or won a division title. When MJ left they lost in the playoffs, when shaq left they lost in the playoffs…

I’m not trying to say that championship rings make or break coaches (I think Jerry Sloan is one of the greatest coaches out there), but he gets alot of credit for a guy who had 4 of the 10 best (maybe even 5 best) players to ever play the game.

  4. RAPMAN says:

Hopefully one day we can name Jay Triano as the best Raptor coach ever…

We still haven’t seen much from him, but personally I would choose him over Sam. I actually think Sam didn’t care too much. But I think Jay is much smarter, and he really cares about everyone (he is friendly). Specially with our Euro-Raptor team I would choose Jay (Bargs doesn’t react too well to yelling).

  5. Tony Rizzo says:

I don’t know if “friendliness” and “good NBA” is a mandatory tandem. Friendliness is great for PR. To me Jay sounds more like a guy running a basketball camp than a “GOAT” coach when he speaks.

The great coaches always have this presence about them, few words, but when spoken each word has the weight of 100. Jay rambles on a lot and sounds more like a camp coordinator than the great coaches that come to my mind.

That is not to say that he will not be successful or great, just that he gives off a different vibe than what I expect from no-nonsense coach. For the sake of the Raptors hope my GOATdar is wrong.

  6. RAPMAN says:

Yea I know Jay is not a good speaker but he is very likable. I would love to have him as my coach, but I always hated his speeches on interviews. He seems very smart, but I hope he can get his point across.
I liked our style of play much better after Jay took over even though we were losing.

  7. Bob says:

Is it just me or was this list to vote from pretty WEAK!?!? I didn’t really want to vote for any of them….LOL

  8. Strik9 says:

So far Lenny is the best coach the Raps have had. He coached the best Raps team we’ve had in 01 and is the only Raps coach with a playoff series victory.

  9. Hardcore Raps says:

where is the none of the above option?

  10. Vimsanity says:

Where is the “They’re all mediocre (except for Kevin O’Neill he sucked)” option?

  11. John-Musca says:
