Wow! BC does have a magic touch this year. Trading a (probable) dnp or deep rotation player for a prospect who has the potential of doing something. Even though, in most likelihood, he wont. Kudos to BC for actively trying to improve this team.
Maybe more firepower, which we have already, and maybe you traded away an expiring contract (not sure when MB’s expires), but Belinelli could conceivably fit the bill of the instant-offense type of player.
I don’t know where he fits on the depth chart just yet, but I’m thinking probably 3rd string SG, but he’s young, and could probably play his way into more minutes.
Furthermore, if he does become the instant-offense type player. Jarrett Jack doesn’t have to be ‘that guy’ per se anymore and focus on playing the game as it naturally comes to him.
The instant offense role is probably Belinelli’s ceiling for this season. At worst, he could be a 3 point specialist, which is something we didn’t have last season (Kapono? ahem…)
It could also mean that DeRozan and Wright see a bit of time at the 3 as well, should Belinelli garner minutes at the 2-spot.
I think the deal was good for us, but I’m just curious how losing our only backup SF (as you just said) makes you feel better about the SF situation. =)
All I can say is that it’s an exciting summer! Not sure how much of an impact this will have in the overall scheme of things, but it seems like a steal for the Raps.
This just goes to show all you kids out there what happens when you get greedy. Better keep working on your Russian Carlos. Hope they pay you this year.
The guy played 21 minutes in the games in played in last year and averaged 8.9 points and 40% from three. Any way you slice it, it’s an improvement over George. Interestingly, it could free the team to offer Pops a contract…
There’s an even more pressing need at the 3 now. Unless they are comfortable with Wright/DeRozan there, especially should Turkoglu ever get hurt, don’t be so sure this opens the door wider for Pops. ;)
I hope not. We still need the rebounding and defense Delfino would provide to the starting lineup.
Belinelli at least has some upside and can provide some nice shooting off the bench, but he doesn’t do anything else well enough to deserve a starting spot on this already offense heavy starting lineup.
Sean H: Doug Smith basically stated the same you did on his blog. He also added that the Raps will be sending some extra cash to complete the transaction. Well worth it in my opinion…
Yeah, I just finished reading the GSW fan blogs and pretty much 99% of the entries feel that GSW got ripped off. I wouldn’t say they got ripped off per se, both contracts expire next year and GSW was clogged with enough SF…maybe a favour was due to BC from a previous transaction? Anyone got a theory?
I’m thinking both player agents pushed for the move, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense otherwise (unless the cash considerations are considerable). Belinelli is 23 with upside and can sell jerseys and increase veiwership strictly due to his nationality…Devean may not get an NBA contract next year. I’d been pissed too, if I were a GSW fan.
Belinelli isn’t worth playing in the NBA. Not sure what the fascination is with him. So what that he scored 38 points in a summer league game. He’s done nothing in the NBS to prove he belongs here. I’d rather have Georges experience and leadership. BC has loved him because he’s Italian….it smells of that.
“Players can be traded for cash, and cash can be included in trade packages. The amount of cash is limited to $3 million. The cash is NOT considered when matching salaries under the Traded Player exception.”
That makes sense if there is a limitation. That said, makes you wonder why the NYs and LAs of the world aren’t out there writing cheques.
Doesn’t matter, I’d still have Belinelli on the bench over George. And we can still get any of the available free agent SF for a vet min. or something. Hornets are shedding salary, so maybe Posey…. Who knows. But this trade is not half bad.
Then you clearly didn’t watch the Raptors play Goldenstate last year because Belinelli torched us from behind the three point line. All I could think last season was, “man it would be great to have an energy guy that can hit three’s in transition for us”
Exactly. George could defend if need be and play tough if need be. He’s played in 3 NBA finals as well and is a quality vet. Things the Raps are lacking. Either way, neither should get major minutes and I’d rather have George playing against our main guys in the practices, on the bench, on the bus, etc.
the guy who know how to get rb, you complain he can’t score; and a guy who can’t sore but you complain his no good in d. come on, both of them only a million player, and better than the experienced guy voskuhl. so, what do you really want? why don’t you ask BC use 1 mil to sign Kobe.
No, but we do need a 15th man that can lead the league in nothing, shoot less than 40% from the field, and 30% from 3. If you were expecting anything from Devean George you were grossly misguided.
did you not see him against the raps last year?? sick passes, sick shooting i remember thinking that we had the wrong italian!! this is a steal for us!! i know we’re all going to love this kid next year..
bc has got dem king kong balls baby!!!
great freaking trade.
this off-season just keeps getting better and better for the raps.BC is a god. I think Marco can definitely help this team, plus if its good to have bosh’s buddy jack than it can’t hurt to have Andrea’s only fellow Italian in the NBA on the team.
Gallo is a good player. Look for him to be a main buliding block for the Knicks, wouldnt be suprised to see him put up solid numbers, especially in D’antoni’s system.
Turning Devean George’s dead body into Belinelli is a great trade. Belinelli’s younger, can shoot, slash a bit, and may thrive on a team where a coach will actually give him some real burn. And this locks up our backcourt rotation very well, at least offensively. I’m not sure if anyone can verify if he can play the 3 at all, which would be a huge plus, but the fact that we got him for George is good enough for me. I still don’t know what’s going to happen on defense, but my God we are going to be putting points on the board.
I would say strickly a 2 because he can play some Point Gaurd since he is a great passer. But i dont see him playing the 3 he is to small (6′5) and isnt tough enough.
mmmh, our two best players (yup, I’m italian and yeah Gallinari may be better than both Beli and Andrea soon) in the same nba team, even if I’m not a great fan of Beli I’m kinda excited, gotta be some long forgotten patriotism or something :)
But seriously I’m not sure Beli is what the raptors need. Poor defense (got somewhat worse with age, at least in terms of focus…PNR defense is a big issue) and poor shot selection (got somewhat better last year, I watched tons of GS games) are the main issues imho. That and being a reserve while Andrea is a starter; I said it elsewhere, Marco was THE star in Bologna and that made many people (including Marco) ignore his game flaws…but he is an improvement over George at this point, no doubt, he can even handle the ball decently for short stretches (he’s not exactly confortable as I read somewhere…and cya Roko!). Well, it’s gonna be an interesting season, hope that Beli can prove me wrong and be a factor.
I see this move as meaning BC has given up on Delfino and he is hopefully looking to get another Big Forward/Center for a bit more size. Maybe Leon Powe, Mikki Moore or Melvin Ely??? I don’t know if any of these guys can be signed for what the Raps have still to spend. Pops would be understandable to sign also, but I get the feeling BC likes using him as a cheap 10-day contract kind of guy. Delfino is extremely redundant now, so please let him take the russian money and heal his shoulder over there.
LOOOLLL, I don’t think GOD himself can even trade Banks. The funny thing is that ( If I am not mistaking) BC was the one who originally gave that deal to Banks in Suns :)
Hedo is now our oldest player. Average age is now 25. If nothing else we are young but also inexperienced…at this stage I’ll take young potential over DNP veteran presence.
BC is stock piling young improving players who are not yet proven commodities and I like it. Hope and potential are better than old mediocrity. Belinelli may also develop more quickly in a Euro-friendly environment.

Yeah, they are, but we shouldn’t let that go to our heads though. I don’t think they are complaining about the trade in the pure sense of “we got robbed” as much as simply being in shock. There is absolutely no reason aside from 1) the cash thrown in, 2) being nice to Belinelli, and/or 3) demonstrating commitment to another backup 2 via actions and not words, for Golden State to pull off this trade. George is an expiring contract, but Belinelli was an even better expiring because they had a relatively cheap team option should he amount to something.
For us, reason #3 is the biggest reason why we win this deal, as long as our lack of depth at SF is remedied somehow.
GSW traded Belinelli for cash and George was the filler. It makes sense for them since Nelson and Marco havent worked out and there is no way they are re-signing him after this year. Much like the Delfino trade, we are getting a streaky but talented Euro with an expiring contract – that we are gambling will improve given the more hospitable environment. The downside is that we’ll have to pay him at the end of the year. But the “cash considerations” are virtually limitless for MLSE, so why not acumulate some talent?
Yes…. I’ve liked Marco and wanted him for quite a while now. B.C., Work it baby, work it. Also Andrea and Belinelli play on the Italian National team. More chemistry being formed..
I got this explination of another post of the video.
“Bargnani is telling belinelli he needs to improve his defense cause in italy it was? much easier for him then how its going to be in the nba…the he tells him his going to need to defend against kobe…and the most important thing…he’s gonna need to learn how to listen….”
Amazing he is just incredible. George who was supposed to be a non-factor this year and to turn that into a legit rotation player is just crazy. Marco is a great passer and has a sweet stroke. His Defence is “iffy” but Id rather have him (24, tons of potential that I trust Triano with) than George (31, possible one of the worst players in the NBA).
I dont understand why the warriors would do this trade. They wouldnt be doing this for financial reasons. They couldve gotten more for belinelli than george (2nd rounder). I guess the GSW want a locker-room guy with experience to coach their young guys. Nice move for the raptors, they traded away the last guy off the bench who would play 1-2 minutes at the end of a game (when one team has the game in hand) for a rotation player. Belinelli will play SG off the bench, and Wright will play SF, unless we can sign someone like kleiza or warrick. And dont forget, we need a 5th big guy to replace patrick (pylon) oh(too slow to get a rebound) bryant.
Do you guys think he might now package the expisring contract of Wright with Roko for a decent small forward ( this will add up to almost 3 mill) !!!! WE basically do not need either of them now and need a a good back up small forward.
Don’t be so quick to write Wright off (no pun intended). DeRozan is better suited to coming off the bench to start the season, and so is Jack. Belinelli is an interesting piece of the puzzle, but he’s shouldn’t be seen as anything more than more depth at the 1 and 2. With the four starters being Calderon, Turkoglu, Bosh and Bargnani, the team would be much better off having Wright start.
You’re right that at this point, we should probably trade Roko, but honestly, what decent small forward on a ~$3 mil salary are you going to be able to fetch with Roko and Wright? As in, if there was actually someone decent and cheap, why would the other team trade that player away? =P
For Derozan to start would provide less pressure on him and will let the game come to him rather than him having to force shots coming off the bench. Think of the situation with Portland and Batum last year (but i expect Derozan to play more minutes than Batum did).
Problem is, and as a note I never saw Batum play last year, DeRozan hasn’t shown any propensity to defend yet, at least in the small sample size that is the summer league. If his defensive play doesn’t change drastically by opening day, I’m not sure how good being torched and then quickly subbed in for will be for his confidence. Wright isn’t an awesome defender, but he’s at least average, if not above average, and has plenty of experience starting. And just because DeRozan is coming off the bench doesn’t mean he will be counted on to score. He’ll still find himself with the likes of Bosh, Bargnani, Calderon and Turkoglu, not to mention Jack isn’t half bad.
I like Wright myself and I think he is perfect for our starting SG but we have a hole in SF now especially if we lose Hedo to engery. The reason i talked about trading Wright is that, with DOuby, Roko, POB and Banks, you can not make annnny trade !!! and with the money we have left, you can not get any desent SF either !!!
So basically the only way to have a good SF is through trade and the only tradeable pice is Wright in package with one of these guys I mentioned above , which I think Roko would be the best.
Very good trade for the raps. . . Marco could be that piece that final piece. . . Straight up i wont waste any further energy on Delfino. . . Now you can put derozan in the starting line up because you already have four lethal scorers and there wont be much pressure on Derozan in the starting lineup to produce right away. . . Second unit will be fun to watch with marco a shooter, wright a slasher, and jack a slasher/shooter. . . Very good piece brayan has received. . . I’d be really pissed if i were a GSW fan! it’s like when the raps lost doug christie. . . Not a superstar type of a player but a good role player whose presence you felt!
Belinelli is still on his rookie contract. He is signed for 09/10 and Rap’s have a team option for 10/11 and he is a RFA for 11/12, with a Qualifying offer.
Also given mins he can play, as shown in Dec ‘08 when he started 15gms and 30mins, with 1stl, 2.6rbs, 3.2ast, 14.1ppg, and 45%fg, 38%fg3, 89%ft
averages per game.
After that did not play consistent mins and then was injured.
Should be a good fit with the Raptors Euro style offense, and coaching staff, and a GM who is a believer.
Wow this was a great move. Belinelli has shown that when given playing time, which he wasn’t given enough of in Golden State, he is a scorer who can basically do what Kapono did last year except he is more athletic, a better slasher, a better dribbler as he sometimes played point guard in GS, and costs way less. He can provide good energy and quick offense off of a relatively offensively dry second unit. George wouldn’t have filled that void so it was a good move to address the needs of the team.
I can’t wait to see how their new team will play out during the season!
I’m not really sure why anyone would have a problem getting rid of Devon George.(Ahem Rye):P Has anyone watched him play the last 2 years? Sure he played a decent role in the Lakers Championships, but his athleticism is almost non-exisisent now, which is pretty much what he relied on to be a solid defender. Marco has some skills, and he’s definitly got the talent to play in the NBA, just needs some guidence. Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBY1cbW7YLs
Belineli’s defence is attrocious. He is a serious liability against 98% of the SF in the league.
Averaging 16pts means nothing if you give up 25.
He is not NBA material. In this league you need to play on both sides of the ball, he doesn’t seem interested in defence at all. TEAMS WILL KEY IN ON HIM the minute he is inserted.
What is worse is that he is athletic and fast, yet his defence is not even CIAU level. It will be 4vs5 when he sees the floor.
lol Rizzo, hes a 2, not a 3, and he ain’t as bad an on-the-ball defender as you chirpin. His problem is hes lost when his man doesnt have the ball, and hes got no idea when or how to box out. Plus, I’m pretty sure the Raps didnt pick up this kid to play D. FYI, Rizzo’s a Dub fan and pissed about the trade :P
I just want us heading a new direction, not returning to the same mistakes we made before. Lets be honest, Belineli will see more burn on our team than anywhere in the league, that worries me.
great move, BC…. but I dont think he is done yet….watch him move Roko now and with a roster spot still open, bring in Stefano Mancinelli who is big and athletic and can play the 3 or 4
In the picture with BC on the phone, anyone know who is the dude on the left?
I went to the TFC game yesterday and saw him with Jay Triano.
Would be nice to know….
I’m a big Warriors fan and i agree with this trade. We are too stacked with guards. I still think we will have a good team. Belinelli will be a good player for the Raptors.

WOW BC Strikes again
*happy dance* glad we dropped george. i didn’t feel good about him as our only backup SF.
I think the deal was good for us, but I’m just curious how losing our only backup SF (as you just said) makes you feel better about the SF situation. =)
Im assuming the staff feels confortable with Wright at that position? Unless there are more deals to be done.
All I can say is that it’s an exciting summer! Not sure how much of an impact this will have in the overall scheme of things, but it seems like a steal for the Raps.

Does this mean Delfino is out of the picture??
I hope not. We still need the rebounding and defense Delfino would provide to the starting lineup.
Belinelli at least has some upside and can provide some nice shooting off the bench, but he doesn’t do anything else well enough to deserve a starting spot on this already offense heavy starting lineup.
Great trade though overall.
love it love it love it…
This year belongs to BC. I mean I remember him trying to get Belinelli last year and couldn’t pull it off. Glad he didn’t give up on him…
Um….I think I’m going to buy that 60 inch plasma after all….enough with watching the Raps on the small screen… I’m going big time for 09/10
Sean H: Doug Smith basically stated the same you did on his blog. He also added that the Raps will be sending some extra cash to complete the transaction. Well worth it in my opinion…

Profits from jersey and other related merchandise sales, if I remember correctly, are not associated with each individual team.
2009/10 Raptors: “The Super Friends”
Belinelli isn’t worth playing in the NBA. Not sure what the fascination is with him. So what that he scored 38 points in a summer league game. He’s done nothing in the NBS to prove he belongs here. I’d rather have Georges experience and leadership. BC has loved him because he’s Italian….it smells of that.
And I don’t like the cash going away. It limits the possibility of buying future draft picks.
The cash doesn’t count against any cap that we know of, so what are you complaining about?
cash always counts against the cap. Why wouldn’t it?
Cash involved in a trade DOES NOT count against the cap. No rational reason I can think of, but it definitely does not.
According to Coons…
“Players can be traded for cash, and cash can be included in trade packages. The amount of cash is limited to $3 million. The cash is NOT considered when matching salaries under the Traded Player exception.”
That makes sense if there is a limitation. That said, makes you wonder why the NYs and LAs of the world aren’t out there writing cheques.
Who fucking cares? We got a player who can do something for a player who can do nothing. Bosh got a buddy on the team so why not Bargnani?
This is a win-win trade. As in even if Bellineli breaks his leg tomorrow it’s still good.
Meh…I disagree. I don’t think Belinelli has or can do anything. I guess we’ll see.
Doesn’t matter, I’d still have Belinelli on the bench over George. And we can still get any of the available free agent SF for a vet min. or something. Hornets are shedding salary, so maybe Posey…. Who knows. But this trade is not half bad.

Great trade BC!
awesome comment, Arse! every word of it.
this Italian kid may actually surprise a few people. he can shoot.
p.s.
long live Arshavin!
but can he defend?
Exactly. George could defend if need be and play tough if need be. He’s played in 3 NBA finals as well and is a quality vet. Things the Raps are lacking. Either way, neither should get major minutes and I’d rather have George playing against our main guys in the practices, on the bench, on the bus, etc.
That was the old motivated George. Have you guys seen Georgi boy last year !!!
well when u look at our 2nd unit before the trade:
PG – Jarret Jack
SG – Antoine Wright
SF – George/wright?/
PF – Reggie Evans
C – Rasho
It looks like we have a lot of defense and toughness but scoring? Jarret Jack is really the only one. But now
PG – Jarret Jack
Sg – Belinelli
SF – Wright
PF – Evans
C – Rasho
We have 2 players capable of averaging double digits so i like the trade it adds bench scoring which is a nice thing to have incase u didnt know lol
I’m just saying I don’t think Belinelli (or Pops) is an NBA talent. I hope I am wrong and you guys are right.
the guy who know how to get rb, you complain he can’t score; and a guy who can’t sore but you complain his no good in d. come on, both of them only a million player, and better than the experienced guy voskuhl. so, what do you really want? why don’t you ask BC use 1 mil to sign Kobe.
But will he blend
MB will surprise a lot of us trust me. I like the cut of his jib (whatever a jib is)
I think it’s a sailing reference.
Hey Rye, watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBY1cbW7YLs
Danm Bryan is good. now all we need now is to get rid of Marcus Banks and bring Pops back and the Raptors will be a threat.
Sure…cuz we need a 15th man that lead the league in the second half in missed dunks?
No, but we do need a 15th man that can lead the league in nothing, shoot less than 40% from the field, and 30% from 3. If you were expecting anything from Devean George you were grossly misguided.

Is it too early to start calling Bryan a three time EOY?
Also gotta love that he did Bargs like Bosh and traded for a buddy.
Jersey sales will be nuts this year.
yes. let’s let them play first and hope they gel quickly. it’s exciting but it’s also a lot of players coming into a new system.
this year’s gonna be fun y’all.
Yes…. I’ve liked Marco and wanted him for quite a while now. B.C., Work it baby, work it. Also Andrea and Belinelli play on the Italian National team. More chemistry being formed..
Translate anyone? This video is awesome

That was awesome. Thanks for that…
I got this explination of another post of the video.
“Bargnani is telling belinelli he needs to improve his defense cause in italy it was? much easier for him then how its going to be in the nba…the he tells him his going to need to defend against kobe…and the most important thing…he’s gonna need to learn how to listen….”
that was dirty….
man, italian players don’t jump when they shoot 3’s do they?
bargnani barely jumped when he shot it from half-court.
Wait, does this mean we can sign Pops?
OH MAN, This guy is on FIIIIIIRRRREEEE :) He said it himself and called himself , Deal Junky and Boy, am I glad he is in Raptor LAND.
BC for Prime Minester :) I am sooooooooo HAAAAPPPYYYYY
Raps are going to be sick next year!
Long Live BC
Remember this from a few days ago?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFDJTGRT-RE
WOW after watching that and the game against New Zeland all I can think of is Delfino who?
WE basically do not need either of them now and need a a good back up small forward.
wright is going to be good for us. we can still use him at both positions.
Only problem with this is that Wright cant be part of a package trade for 3 months after he was originally traded…he can only be part of a one for one
Except Doug Christie was a lot better player back then than Belinelli is now. =)
This is crazy
This team had better be good, cause they sure are AWESOME.
I’d take Marco anyday over DG
That comment wasn’t meant to be a reply :P
Belineli’s defence is attrocious. He is a serious liability against 98% of the SF in the league.
Averaging 16pts means nothing if you give up 25.
He is not NBA material. In this league you need to play on both sides of the ball, he doesn’t seem interested in defence at all. TEAMS WILL KEY IN ON HIM the minute he is inserted.
What is worse is that he is athletic and fast, yet his defence is not even CIAU level. It will be 4vs5 when he sees the floor.
Jose + Marco = Ben Dover
lol Rizzo, hes a 2, not a 3, and he ain’t as bad an on-the-ball defender as you chirpin. His problem is hes lost when his man doesnt have the ball, and hes got no idea when or how to box out. Plus, I’m pretty sure the Raps didnt pick up this kid to play D. FYI, Rizzo’s a Dub fan and pissed about the trade :P
I am not pissed about this trade at all.
Go Raps.
I’m a big Warriors fan and i agree with this trade. We are too stacked with guards. I still think we will have a good team. Belinelli will be a good player for the Raptors.
Belinelli moving his feet well and playing tough D (even if he gets beat)

Raps just got the next Manu.
