Free Agency, Day 1: The Ball Is In YOUR Court…

We weren’t expecting Evans, who else is on tap?

No rumours or chatter about anything other then Marion, so I turn to you, what do you think will happen, and (just for fun) what would YOU do if you were Bryan Colangelo?

48 Raps

  1. The Season is Lost says:

    Let Joey Walk
    Let Parker Walk

Sign Marion for 7-8 mil, or sign and trade with a big name.
Go after Marquis Daniels, Matt Barnes, Royal Ivey, Rodney Carney, Brandon Bass, Popey Jones.

The Turkish Michael Jordan is overrated. Not worth 10 mil.

The key this free agency period is to build depth, not splash all our excess cash on one player.

  2. Macy O'Baston says:

    Cap Marion’s offer at 3yr/24M.
    Cap Parker’s offer at 3yr/9M.
    Cap Delfino’s offer at 4yr/16M.

Go after Linas Kleiza at a deal similar to Hump. Sign a veteran PG (Ivey/Earl Watson type) to a minimum deal. Fill out the roster with bargain wings.

    • mooj says:

I don’t even think we need a veteran PG with Delfino, Parker, and hopefully an emerging Roko

    • matt says:

we need players that can create their own shot. kleiza is not the answer at fucking all. sorry to criticize but if your ambitions for the raps are just him than do not know the kid of team that wins in the nba.

  3. hotshot says:

Well if I am BC my priority is to make this team better, to make my star player Chris Bosh happy and the fans because currently none of them are too pleased in what transpired in the last two seasons.

Therefore re-signing Marion is a top priority for me. Forget Turkoglu we don’t need a shorter version of Bargnani with a lower FG%, we need someone who can rebound and also step up and score when needed.

I would still attempt to re-sign Joey Graham as a cheap backup or make an offer to Marquis Daniels.

Also to strenghten up our SG position, make an offer to Rashad McCants and see if he bites. Demar is not ready yet to be a full time SG.

Delfino has proven that he can an effective backup at the 1,2,3 position but should probably be used at the pg position more so, to give Calderon some relief (unless Ukic is able to step up).

Parker can probably get a much better deal somewhere else, so letting him go might be the best solution.

As for B.C I expect more of the same which will sum the total net of impact from losing players and gaining players will equal to zero. Just like last season, when he got rid of TJ Ford, Rasho and our 17 pick (Roy Hibbert) for JO as a replacement.

  4. Calgary Raps Fan says:

    If I were BC…

    1) let Parker, Graham, Voskuhl and Douby walk – if you can sign&trade any of them for cash/draft picks that would be a bonus
    2) resign Marion
    3) resign Delfino
    4) sign Nesterovic
    5) trade Humphries for Keyon Dooling (a rumor I read online), or for a similar veteran backup PG with equal salary
    6) sign a big name legit starting SG

    STARTERS
    C – Bargnani
    PF – Bosh
    SF – Marion
SG – BIG MONEY FREE AGENT – ie: Ben Gordon
    PG – Calderon

    BACKUPS
    C – Nesterovic
    PF – Evans / Mensah-Bonsu
    SF – DeRozan
    SG – Delfino
PG – Dooling (or similar veteran PG) / Ukic

    EXTRAS
    C – O’Bryant
    PF – Jawai
    PG – Banks

I would also look to trade Bosh, if I got the feeling he was definitely going to walk away after the season (I would include Banks in any Bosh deal). I would look to get a PF and/or SG/SF back in return, or at least a legit starting PF and 1st round draft pick – maybe a sign&trade with the Bulls to get Tyrus Thomas (PF) and Ben Gordon (SG).

  5. shats says:

First of all, I don’t want BC to throw around a 5 year $50 million contract, Whats the point of paying aomeone so much when their 35, unless they’re really really good (KG, Ray Allen, KB)

Marion 3yr/22 million, maxing out at 3yr/ 26 million
Parker 2yr/5 mill, don’t go any higher, he’s very expendable
Delfino 4yr/15 mill, max out at 3yr/15 million

LET JG WALK, he has no more potential to fulfill

Use the MLE togo after Matt Barnes preferably, maybe pick up a backup pg with the remnant of it (anthony carter, royal ivey, shannon brown). You could get a backup pg for Hump (Keyon Dooling)

Also, call Houston and see what they want for Battier or Aaron Brookes

    • Hardcore Raps says:

I don’t see how you offer Delfino more than Parker. They are nearly identical players. Parker more consitent and Delfino more aggressive. I woud be severely insulted if I was Parker and BC offered Delfino double what I was.

  6. Raps Fan says:

Read this online yesterday, and it is worth a discussion:

    To Houston:
    Bosh
    Banks
    Humphries

    To Toronto:
    McGrady
    Scola

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=myo58z

My preference is to NEVER EVER let Bosh go, ever…but this is an interesting trade because McGrady comes off the books, and we can go after Joe Johnson in full force next year.

    • Dave says:

I don’t think the Raptors have much hope of acquiring a top free agent without Bosh on the team.

There will be too much competition for free agents next offseason. Teams with better chances of contending a title will come in and take the top tier free agents, and leave the other squads with second or third tier stars.

    • Hardcore Raps says:

gotta say no thanks to McGrady. We’ve all seen what he has accomplished since leaving the Raps. We have all seen how bad his knees and back are. He’s damaged goods… I’ll be suprised if he plays for more than a couple seasons from here on out.

      Scola I like though

    • nadir says:

Of course, if he isn’t a max Bosh he can stay no problem. But I’m hoping for the big one.

  7. Audley says:

I like the back-up PG situation if Delfino signs. Another dude on the ball along with Parker and Rokoko is good enough for stretches as long as Uno, Dos 3 is healthy.

10 mil would be worth the money to see the Turkish Jordan hit game winning shots and wag his tongue. Oh yeah, his little jig is priceless.

Rasho’s son is Canadian and he would love to come and play in TO again. Plus, he probably knows the Canadian national anthem. That’s definetly worth a strong consideration.

Parker isn’t going anywhere, he likes Toronto. He told me so, well maybe not me directly. But I was looking right at the TV when he said it into the camera.

Looks like Joey’s days in purple, eh I mean red are done. Maybe he could fool BC by pretending to be his brother Steven.

    That’s what I would do.

EC 2nd round – Here we come!!

    • Marc says:

“Parker isn’t going anywhere, he likes Toronto. He told me so, well maybe not me directly. But I was looking right at the TV when he said it into the camera.”

      lol.

  8. Sean says:

I don’t know if this is of any interest, Raps Fan, but if you’re going to write for publication it may be. It’s “other than”. “Then” is only ever used in relation to time, whereas “than” is used in comparisons.

  9. Sean says:

And if I were Colangelo, I’d probably stare at the roster, then at the salary spreadsheet, then at the projected cap/luxury tax spreadsheet, and kinda chuckle and say, “We are fucked.” THen pull some miracle outta my ass. It’s better to be lucky than good.

  10. lieonyourbackandpeeonyourself says:

please no turk, high volume low percentage shooter

no 41% shooter please, not for any price let along 10 mil per

  11. bearvon says:

i’d trade bosh to miami…but only if the beasley/haslem deal is sweetened with chalmers.

then i’d go after hedo…and retain parker.

no doubt it would be a terrrrrrible defensive team…but it could be an offensive force with (finally!) a deep bench…

    calderon/chalmers/roko(haha)
    demar/parker/chalmers
    hedo/beasley
    beasley/haslem/evans
    bargnani/haslem/evans

how awesome would haslem/evans be on the same roster? and real point guard depth!!!

    • bearvon says:

      ^…this will never happen…^

one more year of the same! one more year of the same!

      • Macy O'Baston says:

Why should it happen? That team is noticeably worse than the one that finished last seasons.

Bosh for Beasley/Haslim/Chalmers? Great, 1 established role player (Haslem), 1 future role player/6th man (Beasley), and 1 hopeful role player (Chalmers). Bosh is certainly worth more than that.

  12. d279 says:

    Parker will be gone

  13. Raúl says:

Try to re sign Marion but a reasonable price, 6 or 7 mill. In order to have something left to add depth to the bench. If he does not re sign, try to trade for nocioni
    Re sign Delfino
Re sign Parker, for 2 or 3 years, to make sure he retires in toronto and become an historic part of the franchise. and to help to develope derozan into the player and the person ap is
Go after Rasho, he’ll re sign at a very reasonable price cause he likes the city. And he’s a very profesional player who will serve perfectly as bargs back up
Explore bosh trade options. I like the one with houston if t-mac contrat ends at 2010 and if we can add battier to the mix (I know that won’t happen, but we’re giving chris bosh).
Explore humps trade options and see if we can add a veteran pg who can serve as an insurance in case roko fails (give roko the back up pg at the start of the season)
    re sign pops
let joey walk, see if we can sign and trade him for a late first round pick.
Do not go after Gordon PLEASE
Do not trade Bargnani nor Calderon

    Starting line up

    Bargs
Bosh (Scola if the houston trade happends)
    Marion (Nocioni)
    Delfino (McGrady)
    Calderon

    Bench
    Rasho
    Evans / Pops
    De Rozan (Parker or Battier)
    Parker
    Ukic (Veteran PG)

    • Adam says:

I’m thinking along these lines. I’m not sure if anyone is interested in Hump, but there has to be a free agent PG out there if things get desperate.

If I remember correctly, Parker and Delfino can both play the point. I will be excited to see Rasho back too, I didn’t appreciate him until he was gone.

I’m also willing to entertain Bosh trades if they are good or if things go sour with Bosh. I feel like Bargs would fit better at the 4 if we can get a big, rebounding center for Bosh.

  14. malefax says:

I’ll start by assuming that AP will get a better offer than I am willing to match, since I don’t want to pay him more than 9 million over 3 years. No offer to Joey.

    – Offer Marion 8 million a year for 4 years: 32 million total. Any worse than that and another team could steal him with a full mid-level exception offer, which is worth 32 million over 5 years, and it seems fairly likely that Marion could get the full mid-level from somebody.

Sign Delfino for 3 years/10.5 million. Best offer is 4 years/ 16 million, paying 3.75 million in the first year, 5.25 in the final year with a players option late in last year.

Mid level exception: Offer Trevor Ariza the full mid-level, max raises, 5 years. Assume he gets a better offer.

Offer Marquis Daniels a 4 Year, 18 million contract. Possibly going up to 20 million.

    Lineup:
    C: Bargnani, Hump
    PF: Bosh, Evans
    SF: Marion, Marquis Daniels
    SG: Delfino, DeRozan
    PG: Calderon, Ukic

    Third Men: O’Bryant, Douby, Jawai

This has the advantage that Daniels can also play 2, Delfino can also play point, and Douby is a swing guard. You might want to start Daniels at the 2, actually, and sub him off for DeRozan or Delfino.

    • Macy O'Baston says:

Marquis Daniels is trash. That contract turns into a Marcus Banks contract in a real hurry.

  15. Alex says:

I really like the bosh for beastly and haslem deal too bad it will never happen.

  16. INFO says:

Can Charlie Villinueva play the 3 ? Im not asking because i think hes coming to Toronto but just in general can he play the three? He can shoot and hes a good rebounder because of his size.

  17. FAQ says:

Sources say Toronto is preparing an offer of five years and $60 million for Turkoglu.

However, in order for Toronto to clear enough money to sign Turkoglu to the five-year, $60 million deal, it would have to renounce the contracts of Shawn Marion, Anthony Parker, Carlos Delfino, Patrick O’Bryant and Quincy Douby. The team is leery of taking that path, having that same tactic backfire last season when it created room for the arrival of Jermaine O’Neal.
    …………………………………

Sounds like BC is setting the price for Turkugly to negotiate with other teams. Whoever gets the Turk will be bleeding $$$$$$$. If the Turk does accept a Raptor’s offer, that may herald the early exit of Bosh … with Bargnani taking over the PF position to replace Bosh … finally.

If Turkugly doesn’t join the Raptors, BC will just go to Plan B(osh).. keeping him for the next season and possibly trading him mid-season. What else can you do with the stiff..???!!!!

If Bosh is gonzo now … I can see this Raptor roster emerging:

Bigs: Bargs, Rasho, Evans, Hump, Pops, Printenz(?), others.

Ballers: Calderon, Turk, Delfino, Roko, DeDe, Douby, others.

    You get the idea …..

  18. Baltus says:

If we get Hedo in this fashion then I might become a clipper fan:(

    • The Season is Lost says:

I second that. If hedo comes to T.O. I say we organize a riot.

    • TauEpsilonNu says:

$40/5 is too much for Hedo than $60/5 is approaching JO stupidity – please let this be some blogger’s fantasy and not an actual plan by BC.

  19. Dave says:

$60 million over 5 years is too much money.

I was hoping the Raps could get him a low priced deal of around $42-45 million over five years. The market was looking weak for Turkoglu, with only really Portland and Detroit interested in him, following Orlando’s acquisition of Vince Carter. Anyway, that low priced deal is off the table given how strong the Blazers interest in Hedo is. Too bad, Hedo is no longer a very good option.

    • FAQ says:

Ever think that BC is inflating Hedo’s value so that somebody like the Blazers swallow it and are forced to give up players that BC would scoop up in an instant .. like .. well not much in the Blazer roster of players. But you get the idea …!!!!

If Raptors have to swallow Hedo, then BC may try to aggressively peddle Bosh for payroll control … he’s gone anyway … unless Lebron wants to join his good buddy Bosh on the Raptors …LOL

      • Macy O'Baston says:

I hope so, but I can’t see what BC would get out of inflating his value. The Raps can’t reasonably work a sign-and-trade, and Portland doesn’t have its own free agents that they’d be priced out of. This is troubling.

Watching Hedo in the playoffs it seemed his only move was the old pump-fake-and-jump-into-the-defender garbage. I can’t see him being the central figure on a contending team, and at a salary of $12M he’d pretty much have to be.

He’s an above average offensive player. That’s all he’s got.

        • FAQ says:

Spaniard Rudy Fernandez is sending out signals that he wants to be traded or will go to a Euroleague if Turkugly joins the Blazers .. because it would further limit his playing time and relegate him to the bench.

Maybe BC would like to lift Rudy off the Blazers hands if they get Hedo and are willing to trade for somebody like … Douby … ya think?!

          • Macy O'Baston says:

I certainly hope so. If that’s the case, BC should remove himself from the Hedo proceedings and try and life Rudy. Frankly, I don’t think Hedo’s a much better player than Rudy.

  20. Kevin says:

no one else seems to want to make a bit of a run at Ron Artest?

  21. nadir says:

Pretty exciting stuff I must say. Anyways, a max Bosh is still happening somewhere.

  22. |24Pt0|25 says:

Raps should go after Trevor Ariza.

According to ESPN, Ariza may leave Lakers.

“With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers are currently unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.

Cleveland is making a hard push for Ariza, and the Cavaliers’ coaching staff was speaking with him on Wednesday. While Cleveland can only offer the mid-level as well, Ariza’s disappointment with the Lakers’ stance has moved other suitors ahead of his current team.

The Rockets, Clippers, Raptors and Blazers are also showing interest in Ariza. Portland and Toronto could each offer more than the mid-level exception.”

  23. CalibreMC says:

That’s not the real Khandor is it?
I seem to remember him not liking Ben Gordan’s game a while back???

  24. CalibreMC says:

    Khandor doesn’t write like that.

  25. Raptorsfreak says:

    Khandor!?? Instant championship?!?!?!?

You really like telling jokes, don’t you.
