The people who are outright opposed to the trade cite two reasons. The first being the inclusion of a first round pick and the other being Marcus Banks and his contract. Now there’s nothing we can do about the first round pick but we might be able to salvage something of Marcus Banks. If he could actually provide some stability at the backup PG position this trade just might be better than it appears on paper.
Nobody in Toronto has seen much of Marcus Banks so I though I’d get a take on him and the rest of the trade from a Heat perspective. I talked to David Dwork from Peninsula is Mightier about what Banks and Marion bring to the Raptors.

Thanks again to David and to see how Jamario Moon and Jermaine O’Neal are holding up in Miami, bookmark his blog.
Just for some fun, you should check out this interview done by a little kid with the Miami Heat players. Marcus Banks is second and Shawn Marion is third, I think its hilarious.
34 Raps
I was hoping he’d say something to look forward to about Banks but you could tell he was reaching to say anything positive about him.
same feeling here..
Good interview.
The very least Banks is quite a physical specimen at 6′2 212 pounds and will probably be a better defender then Calderon who isn’t strong enough nor quick enough to defend the likes of the Bibby’s and the Rondo’s of the NBA.
I guess this means that Solomon is pretty much a goner.
Banks got beat out by Quinn for the starting job last year, and then again this year for the back up spot. ‘Nuff said.
He got beat out by quinn because quinn is a shooter, and Miami’s players get trapped. See, Wade, D.
That’s not our problem. Our problem is Roko/Solomon have problems bringing the ball up under pressure. They have little driving ability and are poor defenders in the sense that they get caught up in screens and on switches. For all that, they are better physical defenders than Calderon, but that’s for another time.
In essence, they turn the ball over and get confused about what to do.
For all of Banks’ perceived crappiness, the guy has the legit speed to drive, the smarts to play some d, and the ability tohit an open shot.
Sounds good to me.
They play Quinn because Miami needs a stone-cold shooter/playmaker for wade. We need a guy who can get into the lane, pass, and actually hit a damn shot. Miami doesn’t need any slashing point guards, especially with chalmers. They need shooters. Period.
The reason Parker works so well here is that he just doesn’t turn it over and he pushes the ball. Banks can do that, and will let Parker get a damn rest. Roko can move to the backup two and give us more agresive backup guard usage.
This is going to help.
Banks will play here, and, if he plays enough, will play well and not turn it over.
Banks cant play…he’s not even decent. In suns potent offense in their best years, where almost anyone could pass for an all-star, he was atrocious, cant shoot cant score cant assist and cant defend good enough. He got ok minutes everywhere and couldnt even get that 1st bak up pg spot on good or bad teams.
If he’s supposed to bring stability to TO then Moon is suppose to bring clutch to Miami.
I want him to give Ukic some stress and make my guy work harder for that primary back-up but not thwart his progress like solomon.
Great interview….but the funniest thing was your link to the kid interviewing the Miami Heat players….hilarious.
Funniest thing is that if you are a Miami fan, you woke up the other day realizing that you traded Shaq for HO and Jamario.
Imagine…The Diesel for a broken down has been allstar and a former Globetrotter.
As a heat fan, I had the distinct pleasure of watching a fair bit of Banks this year – he was given some run early in the season and again later.
He is incredibly frustrating as he has the physical tools (hence the reason Phoenix gave him his terrible contract) for PG. He is both quite strong and very quick. Also, he can actually shoot reasonably well (streaky but he is not inept at it) and he is a very good defender, man to man. He can consitently beat his man off the dribble as well.
Sounds great right?
The problem is that basketball is a team game and not a one-on-one competition. Despite having played for several good coaches, he is very inefficient at involving teammates on offense and doesn’t play well in a defensive team concept. He overpenetrates frequently and finds himself with the ball in bad positions and no options. He jacks up shots when he’s not open and gambles too much for steals.
I think alot of teams have thought that with his skills they can mold him into a good player but it hasn’t happened yet and probably won’t.
The best bet is to use him as an undersized 2-guard off the bench.
Dan, I think Arse should have interviewed you.
Great insight. If there is one thing we are used to as Raptor fans, it’s watching our PGs trying to get their own.
Wow, I got the “Rap of the Day”. I am not sure what that means, but I’m stoked!
I think that both Banks and Marion acted like real pros in Miami (especially Marion, who always knew he was a rental) and I hope they play well in Toronto. I hope Toronto is serious about going more uptempo because there should be more fun to watch teams in the league with that style.
nice interview arse.
hahaha they think moon is good on defence! he’s an ace!
this trade it appears for both teams is more about fit then anything else….good shit arse.
i remember seeing banks having a breakout game when he was in phoenix, i think he went for plus 30 and really was the x-factor for that particular game. he was dropping threes from all over the court.
….nevertheless, there is something wrong with him and he sucks.
Arsenalist. i was dying when you broke down how Moon really plays defense. you could just feel his optimism dwindle about moon being a starting sf for the heat. every exec in the nba is a great salesman.
As absurd as it may seem today to many Raptors fans … do not be surprised at all to see Jamario Moon flourish in Miami; not as a star, mind you, but a solid role player for the Heat who can defend & rebound his own position at reasonable cost:
Chalmers, M
Quinn, C
Cook, D
Wade, D
Jones, Ja
Diawara, Y
Wright, D
Moon, J
Beasley, M
Haslem, U
Anthony, J
O’Neal, J
Blount, M
Magloire, J
The Heat are in 5th place at the moment and should only get better moving forward from here, heading toward 2010, when they should be a major in the expected UFA bonanza, as one of the top teams in the EC.
Players with Jamario Moon’s skill set consistently help good teams become better in the upper echelon of the NBA.
Roko Ukic is a better prospect, as a viable PG, in the NBA, than Marcus Banks. Mr. Banks was an effective PG in the NCAA [as a quasi scorer] but his game has not shown the required growth to succeed at this level.
Mr Banks only has to beat out Mr Solomon as 3rd PG, which should not be too hard, given his NBA experience, and Mr Ukic for 2nd PG if he can make jump shots, consistently, which Ukic cannot yet.
Thanks Khan, brevity is the secret of effective communication.
Nice interview. I laughed out loud when you said that Will Solomon shouldn’t even be in the NBA…deadpan! Awesome!
From what I hear of Banks, he might be a decent bench scorer for the Raps. Our bench is weak and could definitely use an adrenaline boost. Maybe if the Raps are lucky, Banks can be a homeless person’s Jason Terry. Although I’m speaking from complete ignorance since I’ve never watched Banks play. Ukic should still get preference over Banks though cause I think Ukic has a brigher future as a solid point guard for the Raps.
ESPN is suggesting Bosh be traded for Biedrins, Turiaf, parts and a first rounder. I say do it. DO IT.
The other players are Belinelli and Anthony Randolph. Please, BC. PLEASE.
I agree, i would do it anytime, Biedris could complement AB very well.
I would add Kapono and Azubuike to the deal. If you want Bosh you have to take kapono’s contract, we’re giving a four time all-star! Kelena is a more complete player than kapono and his 2 million contract expires in 2010
A roster like this looks nice to me
PG: Calderon/Ukic/Banks
SG:Paker/Delfino/Belinelli
SF:Azubuike/Graham/Shawn Marion or a Free agent
PF: Bargniani/Randolph/Humprhies
C:Andris Biedris/Rasho/Turiaf/Jawai
I know there’re 16 players in the roster so maybe we will trade Hump for a pick or not sign Rasho

Not true at all.
Johnn19,
At the PG-spot for this team, Mr. Banks needs to beat out Calderon, Parker, and then Ukic, in order to deserve PT.
At the OG-spot, Mr. Banks needs to beat out Parker, Kapono, Graham, and then Calderon, in order to deserver PT.
There’s a reason Mr. Banks couldn’t stick in Bos, Min, Pho and now Mia. He isn’t good enough, and there’s been no Larry Brown with those teams to show him how he needs to play in order to be successful in this league.
Raul,
NBA trade/Salary Cap Rules prevent Azuibuke from being included in a deal until the off-season.
i don’t think taht’s true, he was re sign in the offseason, why can’t he be traded?
He was a restricted free agent and GSW took advantage of their first right of refusal by matching the Clippers offer sheet and retaining his rights. GS can only trade him before end of July ‘09 if he approves of the deal.
So in simple terms (for Khan), yes he can be traded but Azuibuke must agree to being moved.
Sorry I didn’t know that, thanks both of you of the info and the explanation
Raul,
One of the benefits to having an individual like Raptoronto around is to catch whatever over-sights might have been made by me originally.
What I wrote before should indeed read as follows:
“NBA trade/Salary Cap Rules prevent Azuibuke from being included in a deal without his consent until the off-season.
My apology for mis-communicating with you in that way first time around.
P.S. Considering that he gets no renumeration from me for providing this service, I count myself as fortunate, in this regard. Thanks, Raptoronto. ; )

No problem, from my perspective. To be precise, Azuibuke’s Right to Consent actually expires on July 24, 2009.
Something I found interesting about this interview was the perception he had on Jamario Moon. I often wonder about the contrast between fan perception and league perception of players.
For example, this Miami guy was just looking for a center and a defensive guy. We see all the shenanigans like staying at home instead of supporting the team, or Jamario’s smile and his lackadaisical approach to the game. But no one outside notices these things.
I wonder if it’s truly because the people on the outside are ignorant to these types of things, or is it because we as fans/supporters of the team are overly critical of our players?
